To participate in an international school exchange program, you must have sufficient qualifications in the native language of the country you would like to visit, but it does not have to be an advanced level. Your language skills will improve rapidly once you are immersed in the host country!

You can be placed anywhere in your chosen country. The placements are primarily based on the common interests of the student and the host family. Small communities usually have host families and schools with a lot of interest in receiving and meeting young foreigners. It is you, who together with the host family, your new friends, teachers, etc. make this experience become the learning of a new culture, lifestyle, and an unforgettable experience!

Exchange students live with a host family. There are families formed by retired, single, divorced parents, with only one father or mother with children or without children, who agree to host a foreign student, during the exchange program. These families provide a room (can be shared with another person of the same sex and close age), a quiet place to study, board, and support during the stay. They treat their student as a member of the family, not as a guest. In return, they enrich their homes and communities, getting to know a different culture and creating long lasting international friendships.
Remember: In host families there is a great variety of ethnicities, and diversity of religious practices.

The student cannot be guaranteed to receive academic credit as each location and high school has different regulations. We encourage you to talk to your guidance counselor or academic advisor at the host school to explain what you need to do to earn these credits.

Your qualifications can be transferred to Ecuador through a process called validation. You can obtain more information about the validation process, in the following link:

https://convalidation.com/

Exchange students are participating in an academic program. This means they must attend, interact in all their classes, and maintain at least a C grade or higher in each subject.
They must respect the rules of the house and obey all government laws. They could be expelled from the program and returned for breaking them. The student receives a document with the rules that must be complied with responsibly.

Remember that the main focus of the program is attending school, integrating with your new family, and learning from the host country. Exchange students must spend important holidays such as: Christmas, New Year and/or Easter at their placement. Independent travel is not allowed without your host family, school or local representative for the duration of the program. You may have the opportunity to travel and explore the host country and beyond your community, this requires independent trips or visits from parents that can only be at the end of the program, must be planned, documented (Dates, names of adults in charge, places, etc.) and approved in advance.

The Area Coordinator is intimately involved with many of the details surrounding this intercultural experience. The coordinators are in charge of the selection of the host family in addition to the placement and final approval between the student and the family. They also communicate with local schools to make preparations for the participant’s arrival. During the school term, coordinators have regular contact with students, families and, host schools, providing guidance and support to help ensure the experience goes smoothly.
