It is necessary to have the following profile:

  • Enjoy sharing time with the children.
  • Minimum 500 hours of childcare practice.
  • Have a good level of conversational English.
  • Provide verified job references.
  • Submit a medical report of good health.

To qualify for the program, you must speak conversational English. We verify the language skills of each participant during the initial process through an interview in English. You do not need to have a perfect level English; part of the experience is that you practice it and perfect it. Once you travel you will be amazed at how quickly your knowledge of the language improves.

You must have 500 hours of experience in caring for children under 10 years of age. For the care of children under 2 years of age, minimum of 200 hours of specific experience is needed, which are part of the total. You could be placed faster if you have more hours of experience. AuPairs cannot be solely responsible for a child who is less than three months old.  Many participants join this program because they enjoy taking care of children.

You must keep track of your childcare of hours to complete the 500 hours of experience. The details of these hours will be confirmed through contact with the parents as part of the application process. In case you do not have the required hours, you can still start the application process. You would provide the information for current hours of experience and start accumulating the rest of the required hours through volunteering in nurseries, children’s centers, taking care of children of acquaintances, etc. Until the completion of the required hours.  It is a simple process and we will help and guide you from start to finish.

AuPairs must provide child care for up to 45 hours per week, no more than 10 hours per day.  They have a weekend off every month, from Friday night to Monday morning.  During the year they receive 2 weeks of paid vacation.  They must follow the family schedule. They could work on weekends and evenings.

The participant should consult with the host family, the childcare schedule and plan their classes at a local institution.

AuPairs can be responsible for a variety of tasks related to children, such as:

  1. Play with children, help parents limit screen time, take children to do interesting things;
  2. Help with the training of their needs, teach children to clean, to tidy up their toys, to support in disciplinary norms and rules;
  3. Simple household chores related to childcare, such as washing children’s clothes, keeping your room tidy, or vacuuming play areas;
  4. Prepare, cook healthy meals for children, help prepare school lunches and maintain the cleanliness of used areas.
  5. Monitor children’s hygienic needs, bathe and brush their teeth;
  6. Supervise responsibilities related to children’s pets;
  7. Help with homework.

Many families are interested in Having AuPairs teach children their native language.

To apply you must know how to drive and have a valid driver’s license. You must obtain an international driver’s license before your trip. You must acquire the state license after your arrival in the United States. During your interview, you can ask the potential host family what your responsibilities would be as a driver for their children, places to take them, distances, activities in which they participate, etc.

You can be placed anywhere in the U.S. Usually close, on the outskirts of large or important cities. The placements are primarily based on the common interests of the applicant and the host family. Finally, it is you and the family who select each other.
It is up to you, together with the host family, your new friends, etc. to make this experience an unforgettable one!

Participants initially travel to the United States on a 12-month AuPair J-1 visa and can extend the program for an additional 6, 9, or 12 months. Upon completion of the program, AuPairs have a 30-day grace period in which they can stay in the United States (work is not allowed during this time).

As part of Department of State regulations, participants must complete at least 6 credits at an Accredited Postsecondary Institution during the program year. This is a fantastic way to study something that interests you, make new friends, and experience another important aspect of American culture. Your host family must give you $500 as an educational bonus for these classes, which will be paid directly to the institution.
Your local coordinator can help you find classes that meet the necessary requirements.
In case you decide to extend the program, you must comply with the new hours of education. Host parents must pay:
6 months extension – 3 credits (30 hours), $250 paid by the host family.
9 months extension – 6 credits (60 hours), $500 paid by the host family.
12 months extension – 6 credits (60 hours), $500 paid by the host family.

Different cultures have different child care practices, so all participants must have safety training, which is prior to the host family arrival. These are training are done through our online or in-person training program. The Academy deals with very important issues about the great responsibility that AuPairs have when they take care of children. Safety, bathing and food are examples of issues that are reviewed.

Participants attend the Academy which has a 32-hour curriculum including courses in Child Development, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or CPR, Pediatric and Adult First Aid, American Culture, Life as AuPair, Personal Safety and other important topics.
In addition to this training, our AuPairs have a variety of advanced online training course options during their program, such as:
Infant and Toddler Care Training, English for ChildCare, Homeschooling, K-8 Academic Success, Food and Nutrition for Children, Screenless Play and Learning, Never Drive Distracted, Positive Discipline for All Ages, Teaching a Foreign Language, etc.
These courses are optional and have a cost.

Having an agreement – match, with a host family will take days to a few months from the date on which the interviews with the families begin. The time it takes will be determined by the specific needs of the family and the availability of the applicant, who has the corresponding qualifications. It is very important to have common interests and similar expectations at the time of election. Make sure your profile is attractive and interesting.

Before the interview, be sure to review the family profile and write down any questions you deem necessary. It is very important to find out about the children, the routine of the family, about the rules of the house and their daily life. During the interview both parties will get to know each other a little more. However, the first impression is essential. For the interview you should be in a quiet place with good internet connection. It is a good practice, if possible, to talk to the children. Try not to worry about the language, it is normal to be nervous. When the time comes, we will help you prepare for these interviews.

A good AuPair must be motivated, hardworking, responsible, flexible, open-minded, interested in socializing with a respectful, optimistic attitude with the whole family and with other people from a different culture.
The following are qualities of a good AuPair:
The number one skill of an AuPair is patience, followed by the ability to solve problems or situations that arise throughout the day, whether helping with homework, a crisis, or child-related behavior.
Independence, proactivity, imagination are important as well. There will be many opportunities where you need to take the initiative, if you want to achieve something.
Communication with the host family is basic and punctuality is a must.
You must be able to take responsibility by demonstrating the work commitment you have.
